Fish

On Friday, I brought in a platter of fried fish sandwiches for my coworker to enjoy.

When one asked, "Oooh. What's with the fish sandwiches?"

I replied, "It's Fish Friday."

Obviously, he wasn't a religious person, as his follow up question was, "Did you grow up having fish on Fridays?"

And I answered, "I grew up on the coast, by the sea. Almost every day was a fish day, with some crabs, clams, oysters, mussels, and lobster in between."

  1. Oh! I remember almost everyone in our town having fish on Friday, even non-Catholics. The fishman always got an extra order in on Fridays to accommodate those of the Roman persuasion and it wasn't long before he had to double that!My mother would send me to the shop, late afternoon, while she made chips(fries, you say in USA) and it was ready when Dad came home.

    1. Dinahmow, I love fish and chips! I had fish and chips before I had burgers and fries. Good times. When I was growing up, I thought they were called chips because the potatoes were usually cut bigger than the smaller, thinner fries. I make fish and chips now at least once a month, to satisfy a craving.

  2. I have never had fried fish, as I don't like actual fish. I do like flounder and salmon though. I do like my crab and lobster though.....yummy!

My aunt almost always has fish on Fridays.

    1. Maddie, Not even a McDonald's Filet-o-Fish? Fried fish is another example of how food tastes better when fried, like chicken, gator, and ice cream...found at the state fair. That said, I love seasoned fish baked in coconut milk...also, I love grilled fish...

  3. Back when Fred Flintstone and I were in grade school, they served fish sticks every Friday in the cafeteria. I love those things to this very day. We rarely set foot into a church, but my father (sorta, kinda, Catholic) cooked the dreaded whole fish of some kind every week. Eyes, fins and all! Gross! Just gimme a can of tuna and mayo.

    1. Yep! The fins were the only part I liked when the fish was fried. Very crunchy. I can't eat anything that's sitting on a plate looking at me accusingly. Not to mention the smell of it when raw. *SHUDDER*

    2. Deedles, I love fish sticks! Whole fish for a meal was standard--boiled, steamed, grilled, baked, or fried. And while most of my family went for the eyes of the fried fish, I went for the collar...

I love sashimi...I grew up eating freshly caught fish; it's cleaned, filleted and eaten with some soy sauce or lime juice and coconut milk.

    3. Urp! Balder Half loves fish in any shape or form. He lives for sashimi. Again, URP! According to him, I cook a pretty mean fish. Just don't ask me to eat it!

    4. What's with eating the eyes?!?!? I'd be afraid I'd find one floating in the toilet staring back up at me.
